I couldn’t imagine rating Nichols Surf Shop lower than 5 stars. He provides the kind of local, small business service we don’t see anymore. Not only are the prices more than fair, he throws in freebies and makes sure what he supplies meets your needs.

He provided guidance and recommendations on the phone and also in-person when I showed him exactly where we were going.

Hour late drop-off. Broken equipment. Early pick up.

Called to reserve two kayaks for the following day. He stated that he doesn't have a shop but would deliver the kayaks for us. Great! He wanted to drop them off early so he could get to his surf class. We accommodated this and agreed to meet between 8-8:30a. The next morning I was ready and waiting by 8. At 8:20 I got a call that he cancelled his class because of rain in the forecast, he wondered if we still wanted the kayaks. No new ETA given. He didn't show up until 9:30. He didn't check his equipment before arriving because one of the seats was broken. Not fun to kayak without back support. He said that he would be flexible on his pick up time and we agreed to be done about 6p. Received a call at 4:30p, while kayaking, that it was getting dark and he needed to pick up the kayaks by 5p (sunset was after 6p.) We explained we couldn't make it back by then but would do the best we could. This concluded our kayak trip. No discount offered for the inconvenience, wasted time, or broken equipment.

Two stars because the kayaks didn't sink.

If you choose this place, make sure you are flexible to HIS schedule and ask him to check his equipment first. Or, just call someone else.

Great experience! Staff were helpful and friendly and were willing to drop off/pick up bikes for our use! Easy to get ahold of and our bikes were just fine for our little trip along the beach in NSB.

Chuck is great and super responsive. A friend of mine came in from out of town and we kind of in the spur of the moment decided to go paddle boarding and kayaking. Called these guys up and he met us at their shop 15 minutes later and we grabbed the kayak.

The best place to rent. Chuck does a great job getting you setup and prepared for the paddle. The prices are great, best in town. The Nichols shop has been around longer than me... so, your getting an ol' school local who understands what makes your experience memorable.

If you expect to receive what is listed on their website- you will not. If you pay for the 2 hr. class expecting to have the 1 hr. in the water time- you will not (unless you happen to be the only one in the class.)
I paid for 4 of my children to attend this class, full price, no siblings discount, assuming they would all be getting an hr. of actual surfing as stated. I paid (4) full priced sessions. Totaling $460. What I received was 1 hr of instruction in the sand with a clipboard, and (4) 15 min lessons in the water. When I questioned him about it, I was offered “a few more min if I wanted”. So be aware, it’s 2 hrs of HIS time you are splitting, not actual surfing. He said the kids each got 15 min of water, but 45 min of watching. Yeaaaaah. Would not recommend.

Rented bikes for the day. Owner and service (delivery and pick up) were fantastic and friendly. Bikes themselves were not great. Would give 5 stars if bikes were better condition.
